To be straight forward with you it takes a good sense of knowing how far you want to push your limits or how far you are willing to train to be in a heightened sense of awareness all the time. No longer blissfully walking through life.
Learning to shoot, and shoot well is one thing, but articulating and packin a pistol with the intention (attitude) of self-defense is an entirely different matter.
You start with your attitude. Is it fear or factual based? Hopefully a tiny bit of natural precaution, warranted by anything that makes a loud noise with some recoil included. One day you are startled by the slightest noise and the next you are at the range with me, shooting a shotgun having a grand ol' time. What changed? Your mindset and how you react.
What skills do you need to build to be prepared to handle your own personal self-defense? Planning on shooting from a vehicle one day? Where are you going to learn how to do that in a "safe" environment?
What knowledge do you need to gain to be able to make a decision on a moment's notice?
Do you need to change what you wear to fit your firearm? How about a firearm for every occasion? Totally smile when you read that last question. From larger framed firearms to pipsqueaks, you will always pickup that faithfully comfortable one, because you have shot it the most, are familiar with how it feels and like it above the rest of your collection.
Did you get a chance to purchase your own pistol? How does it fit in your hand? Since I began teaching in 2013, I have come to recognize a couple things with my lady students. GUYS! Let her pick her own firearm!
If its to big, to loud, to heavy to....fill in the blank...she highly likely will never carry it.
